Monthly Movies: March'12
This is the "how on earth did I manage to go this often to the movies?" month! I even saw 4 movies in an 8-day period! Kind of crazy, even for me! :p
March was definitely a month for flights of the imagination and high doses of adrenaline: spies being double-crossed, spies competing for the same girl, Martians, the magic of the earliest movies, guys threatening to jump off a ledge and some funny retired Brits lost in India...

It's "hurry up and catch all the Oscar nominees before the big day" month! :p
Or at least it was supposed to be... but some of the ones I was missing had already come and gone (Tinker, Tailor...), others only hit the screens here on Oscar weekend (Hugo, My Week With Marylin...) so I didn't really have time to get to them! Oh well, short month - short movie list.
Well now, that was interesting! I went in (my Dad's choice of movie) knowing absolutely nothing about this movie other than Brad Pitt got a Best Actor Oscar nomination for it (imho a well deserved nomination!). VoilĂ ! The sum of my knowledge before it started. Which is probably a good thing because had I known just a little bit more I probably would have said "no thanks" since a movie about baseball and statistics would have held no interest for me beyond Brad Pitt's performance and seeing as how I had no choice but to see it in Spanish (wasn't one of the few we've been getting un-dubbed) I would have chosen to wait for the dvd. And I would have missed out, because that was one damn fine movie! Great performance, yes sir, but also a fascinating story and look into an aspect of a sport that I knew next to nothing about! Who knew player's stats could be given so much meaning and brought to life in such an interesting manner? And based on a true story... the ending surprised me! I expected Pitt's character to make a money/prestige-based choice which he didn't. Anyhow, really like this film! :o)
Addendum: just my rotten luck! One week after seeing this the Yelmo went ahead and released it in VOS (i.e. English w/ Spanish subtitles) as well! I guess I should have waited... oh well! :p
Wow! Way to tug on the heart strings Spielberg + John Williams (beautiful musical score)! I have vague memories of reading this book as a kid, must have gotten it from the library though 'cause I searched through the bookshelves at home, and it's not with our childhood books (although there are tons of other "horsey" books). I thought it was a beautiful tale, full of moments of magic, heartbreak and thrills. I particularly loved the dialogue between the two enemy soldiers as they worked with those wire clippers... Lovely, epic movie. :o)
Wow, I can't believe I didn't notice the first time around just how much this movie was skewed to a younger audience compared to the original trilogy! Between the Gungans and the battle droids ("roger, roger")... yikes! Could they be any more annoying?! I guess the first time out I just let myself be overwhelmed by the fact that I was getting more Star Wars (to say I'm a fan would be a major understatement... you should see my bookshelves... lol!) plus the amazing special effects, the gorgeous soundtrack and Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. ;o) And I like Natalie Portman as Padmé, but not so much when she's all decked out as Queen Amidala (and speaking in that stilted voice and language). Plus I got a hoot out of seeing R2-D2 and C3PO and loved the fact that I could pick out key musical cues from the original trilogy in various parts of the soundtrack.
In any case, Gungan and droid shuddering aside, I quite enjoyed watching it again on the BIG screen (some movies were just meant to be seen big), and I thought the 3D transfer was fantastic! I was just as moved as the first time while watching the climactic fight between Darth Maul and Obi Wan and Qui Gon, with the mesmerising Choir of the Fates singing in the background (brilliant John Williams!). I'd say it's worth going if you're a fan, or if you have younglings you would like to properly introduce to the world of Star Wars. And you're willing to ignore the cringe-inducing Gungans.

Monthly Movies: Jan'12
One of my local movie theatres, the Yelmo Puerta de Alicante, is finally showing current movies in VOS!!! (i.e. orginal language with Spanish subtitles). Just one session per day of the four sessions each movie is showing (so you've got to work around their schedule), but that's better than the nothing we had before. And I've been so enjoying these performances un-dubbed! I hope they keep it up! :o) So this January I got to play in a Zoo, cringe at some incompetent bank robbers, watch a criminal mastermind match wits with a genius detective, lose myself in a performance without words, catch glimpses of Britain's recent political history, and watch a man reconnect with his family and his roots.

Monthly Movies: Dec'11
Not much time for movies in December (2 were seen in the same week)... unsurprising considering how busy it gets during that month! A period courtroom film, a holiday-themed rom-com and an action piece: quite diverse! :p

Monthly Movies: Fall 2011
Hmmm... for some reason I haven't been able to keep up my Monthly Movies this year! I keep playing catch-up by writing about several months at a time like I did with the Summer Movies. Not good... I need to get into the habit of signing in and writing a quick something about each movie when I get home right after having seen it, 'cause otherwise when it comes time to write the post I don't always remember what I wanted to say! This Fall it hasn't helped that I haven't been too inspired by what I saw on-screen, and those I did really enjoy I told you about in Movie Magic or Madness posts. Anyhow, in an attempt to get things back on track, here's a brisk run down of the movies I've seen this Fall. They include some spy tales, romance, drama, fantasy, period drama... Let me know if you've seen them and what you thought of them!

Monthly Movies: December airplane bonus!
Airplane bonus!
With over 20h of air travel time between Paris and Auckland, you can bet I made the most of the fabulous in-flight entertainment system to catch up on movies I missed on the Big Screen and discovering others that weren't even on my radar!
Leaving Paris I decided to start with something light-hearted to help keep me awake while waiting for dinner (we took off at 1 a.m. instead of 11 p.m. because of snow issues). And what a pleasant surprise this was! A more adult rom-com than usual, both characters feel very real, and it's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie w/ Drew Barrymore so much! She makes me understand her pain and frustration at living in a long-distance relationship (she's in San Francisco, boyfriend in NY) and desperately trying to establish her career while finding a way to move closer to him.
After a night of desperately trying to sleep (and failing miserably most of the time), I realised I'd waited too long to start my 2nd choicem so had to flip through the options for something shorter. I landed on Winter's Bone (which as far as I know hasn't hit a screen near me) that I keep glimpsing very good info about across the Atlantic.
WOW! Talk about intense! The young lead Jennifer Lawrence is amazing as she desperately tries to locate her father (who skipped on his trial hearing) so she and her younger siblings don't lose their house (which he had the brilliant idea to put up as a bond), all the while taking care of the young ones and teaching them how to survive. She carries the whole movie solidly on her shoulders and does it brilliantly.
I didn't want to risk missing out on this one again (previous flight), so I started out the flight between Hong Kong and Auckland with Julia Robert's latest (and thought how fitting to watch a travel movie while on a trip!). She's wonderful as usual and the movie presents some interesting ideas as to life, love and God which made me take pause, and I had a great laugh at the Italians' view of Americans and they feel they have to earn life's pleasures! (completely agree with their assessment, and am glad to be more European than American in that aspect) Oh, and I'm now curious about reading the book...
After a decently long nap I went for comedy again to accompany brunch, and couldn't resist the lure of one that takes place during a Renaissance Fair and stars the delightful Christina Ricci! What a blast! I loved the mix of faux Shakespearean / medieval English and thought it was a really cute story! (plus I love those dresses, lol!)
So, have you seen these? Any thoughts? I just realised (looking it up on imdb) that All's Faire was from 2009! Some movies just never make it across the pond... grrrr!!!!

Monthly Movies: Autumn 2010
Yikes! What happened with my monthly movies posts??? I love writing these! I just wasn't really inspired this summer... not much worth writing about other than Inception which deserved its own "Movie Madness" post but was too busy to write (I thought I had, just realised while looking for it for a link that I hadn't!). And the fact that I didn't see a single movie in October (shocking!) is proof that having a lot of work to do and needing a bus to go to the movies... well it ain't easy! :p
I could just drop it for now and start up again in 2011 (Feb, since I doubt I'll see anything in January), and you've probably seen most of them by now, but still... My movie obsession won't let me drop it and I'm interested in hearing what you thought of those of these films that you've seen. So this post is just a combo of the Fall, not as complete as usual because some of them I only jotted down a few notes after seeing them and that was a while ago... but I don't want to leave them out 'cause there were some little (French) gems I want you to keep your eyes open for if you happen upon them!

Monthly Movies: March+April '09
March and April: the "couldn't get to the cinema much" months thanks to a bloody pair of crutches! grrr... That and not much time to blog, figured I'd just combine the two movie months... :s
So we've got a trip down the rabbit hole, a old country singer, some passionate letter-writing, a stint in a criminal psych ward, a very high body count and some boys' time!

Also known as the "preparing for the Oscars" edition! (with one notable exception) Three best picture nominees, one which should have been (imho), and one pure piece of fluff I wish I had seen something else instead of... ;o)

A philosopher in Roman Egypt. A famous woman pilot. A father trying to reconnect with his children spread across the country. A couple looking for the perfect place to raise a family. An inspirational rugby match. Mastering the art of French cuisine. A movie director going through an existential crisis. The original (and most famous) sleuth.
Lots of movies (I can't believe last week I actually went 3 nights in a row!) and lots of diversity in the subjects! But I can tell I'm no longer in Liège: almost no non-US/UK movies (except for one, and that was filmed in English), sigh! Oh well, at least we're entering my favourite part of the year: that of excellent films hitting the screens in such abundance that it's almost Solomonic having to choose between them because you know you can't possibly catch them all (but I'm doing my best, lol!)

Monthly Movies: December'09
Hmm, not much for December! That might have something to do with 5 days spent on the road heading South, or on the Holidays, or on the really busy last couple of weeks in Belgium. Well, at least they were damn good movies! :o)
"This is a story about boy meets girl. This is not a love story."
I like that. I don't quite know why, but I do! And I also really liked this movie! Sweet yet real. Funny. A lovely tale of a relationship that felt quie real to me, both in the good and the bad.
I was a bit worried about the presence of a narrator when the film started, but the device was very well used and served to remind us that this was a story. Someone is telling us a story. No big serious subject to think about. No big empty special-effects driven popcorn movie. Just a story. Between a boy and a girl. We don't get enough of those any more. Reminded me a bit of Once in that sense....
I don't think I've ever seen Zooey Deschanel in a movie, but I can see why people like her so much and I'm very much looking forward to seeing her in the Bones episode coming up this month! (which will be past by the time I post this in early January, lol!) She has some mannerisms that reminded me so much of Emily Deschanel that it was a bit disorienting at times! :p
PS: Great soundtrack
PPS: I've got to get my Dad to see this, he'll love it! ;o)
Can I just say... WOW!
Wow enough to have seen it twice within a week... once here in Alicante with my Dad (in Spanish) and then a week later in Barcelona (in VO!!!) with some friends... one of whom's sister participated in creating the special effects! Her company (Framestore) in London worked on the helicopters and other aerial vehicles as well as a few other things. Was really cool talking to her about it all after seeing the movie. :o)
I'll admit to having been sceptical about this movie when I saw the first trailer. But the second one started bringing me round. As a big cinema fan I was always going to go see it (what with it probably being a "historical" moment, or "the next big thing" on screens), but I'm so glad it was way better than I expected.
So, more specifically? Well the first time I saw it I was so wowed by the 3D (it all feels so REAL!) that I was worried upon watching it a second time I might realise the story, acting etc. were cr@p or something. But nope, enjoyed it even more! Sure the whole plot is rather simplistic "humans are bad, over-exploiting natural resources, pushing a native people off their lands for the treasure" (loved the name of that mineral: unobtanium?!). Yes it brings to mind Dances With Wolves, Ferngully, The Emerald Forest and any other story of the exploitation/extermination of Indians, Aboriginees etc... But hey, it's a story that's as old as the world, and it still works! I would have preferred some slightly less two-dimensional bad guys, but I so enjoyed everything related to the Na'avi that I'll forgive James Cameron that much. :p
And that's what I really enjoyed, the whole world of the Na'avi. From the magical and ethereal Pandora they live on (a whole planet as a symbiotic organism with one species able to tap into those connections? fabulous!), to their grace and stature, to their culture and relationship with the people/world around them. And I just loved seeing Sigourney Weaver as one of them! ;o)
I'm also thrilled to hear it's doing so well on screens in the US and across the globe. It's nice to see an original movie having such a success (as opposed to the usual chapter X of a franchise or a sequel/prequel thingy). Personally I'd go see it again at least once on the big screen (and definitely in 3D) if it were playing in VO in Alicante. sigh!

Monthly Movies November'09
A rather diverse movie-month! Little-known WW2 resistance fighters in Paris. A crazy mega music festival. Vampires and werewolves. Russian ex-Bolshoi musicians impersonating current BolshoĂŻ musicians for a Tchaikovski concert in Paris. Corporate whistle-blowers. Dolphins. Even linguistically: Rumanian, Hebrew, English, Russian, French, Japanese...
Care to take a look? ;o)

Monthly Movies: October'09
Woah! A whole month without going to the movies?! OUCH! That's how long between the last film I saw in September and the Ugly Truth which I saw with my dad, sister and cousin last weekend in Alicante... scary! I couldn't let the month go by with a Rom-Com having been my only cinematic outing, not when there were so many I'd wanted to see and had missed due to lack of time (or last-minute motivation), so I purposely stayed downtown later today to catch another one! ;o)
DELICIOUS! :o)

I'm sure many people will identify with different elements in the film, my moment was when Julia and her husband are talking about "going home" and she asks where that is and he answers "home is where we live". That is so me and my life...
Speaking of her husband, Stanley Tucci complemented Meryl Streep really well, they made such a great couple it kind of reminded me of The Devil Wears Prada. :p
Very predictable (as usual for so many romantic comedies) but quite funny! There were several moment's when Heigl's "dumb blonde" act were a bit tiresome though... And Gerard Butler was yummy! (except when he was being too despicable) ;o)

Monthly Movies: September'09
Not a single dubbed movie in September... EXCELLENT!!! It's so good to be back in Belgium ;o)
And I just switched to the new Blogger Post Edit thingy... with lots of new options I plan on fiddling with, starting with the "break"! I've wanted that option for sooo long... I'm guessing it won't make a difference if you click in from your "following" reader (or whatever it's called) since that takes you straight to the post page (as opposed to the full blog page), but if you're reading this from the main Blog page... and you want to know what I thought of September's movies (Abrazos Rotos, Inglorious Basterds and Public Ennemies), well then get ready to JUMP! :p

Monthly Movies: August'09
August = Summer movies winding down... quality winding down as well. Sigh! This time last year I was all bubbly over the fun I had with Mamma Mia!. No such luck this time.
G.I. Joe: I can't believe I'm even admitting to having seen this one! Curiosity and nostalgia (used to watch the cartoon after school as a kid, I loved there was a tough redhead out there kicking ass! lol! there just aren't enough redheads out there!) got the better of me one afternoon when I really wanted to lose myself in a movie theatre and I'd already seen the other mildly interesting options... The end of summer is usually a very difficult time movie (quality) wise!
So, what to say about this film? Well, it goes boom! a lot. :p But there's really no developed characters, they're all caricatures. Doesn't seem to be much of a plot either. It's just there to be pretty and go boom! I also thought it was pretty lame of them to turn one of the bad guys into a reluctant, coerced bad guy... As a marine biologist I did get a kick out of the new evolution of critter-cams! Cool mechanical spy-bot tunas! That and the underwater battle ships modelled after sharks and rays? Kudos to recognising the value in Nature's designs! ;o)
Hmmm... I just realised what the biggest problem with this film is: it's an origins story, that apparently is rather successful (at the box office)... which means sequels! argh!
My Life In Ruins: OUCH! As my sister (we made a family outing of it) says "that was physically painful!" It was so bad I felt guilty laughing at some parts. I mean, how many stereotypes and contrived situations can you put in a single movie?! The friendly and polite Canadians, the rude Americans, the unhappily married couple, the man-crazy divorcées, the angry teenager, the wise-ass who thinks he's funny, the guy who works on holiday and never lets go of his cell phone... The trailers showed so much promise! But that's 'cause they just showed the little bit of good stuff. We expected more from the team behind "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". Sigh! Will be my reference point for "lousy movie comparisons" for a while now.
Public Ennemies: At last!!! I of course went (with my dad) to see this on opening day, after waiting a month and a half I wasn't waiting another day! lol! And I can't say I was disappointed, I really enjoyed it! :o) My dad though seems to be graduating from the need to see dark films to which we already know the end, "what's the point?" he asks. Well the point is the same as in life: it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey! Sure we know how it will all end, but seeing it happen... seeing that world come to life on the screen with such great actors, well, it makes it all worth it! Johnny Depp was fabulous as usual (the day that man disappoints me is the day I quit movies), Christian Bale did real good, and Marion Cotillard was waaaay better than I expected (and much prettier than in "La Môme" aka "La Vie en Rose"). I loved the snappy dialogue (and I'm pretty sure it's even better in English), I loved the pacing (until the end), I loved the music... and I loved seeing a "darker" film in the summer (as opposed to all the popcorn)! I'm writing this a week later (why didn't I do it when I got home?! damn!), and I'm still feeling good about it. In fact I plan on seeing it again in a couple of weeks when I get to Belgium as the local "arts" theatre in town (Liège) will be playing it in V.O.S. (I already checked their schedule, lol!). My only negative point about the film was towards the end it did kind of feel a bit longish, as if it were dragging its feet somewhere, but I just couldn't figure out where. Oh, and there was this one scene I remembered from the previews, a press conference (I think) when Dillinger escaped the first time, with Feds saying "John Dillinger has given us another chance to capture John Dillinger", a scene I quite enjoyed... and it wasn't in the film! grrrr I hate it when scenes I like from trailers are ultimately cut for the film. Will have to look out for the dvd, a director's cut or something. ;o)
The Boat That Rocked: A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!! I saw trailers for this one all Spring... and then the movie never showed up in the Alicante cinemas! So very frustrating, until it popped up as one of those selected to be shown in VO in the single cinema that does one VO a week. So a bad thing made wonderful! ('cause this wouldn't have nearly been as good dubbed in Spanish...). New Richard Curtis (Love, Actually; Bridget Jones; Notting Hill) movie about a Pirate Radio station based on a ship in the North Sea of the coast of Britain. Led by Bill Nighy and fabulous DJs Philip Seymore Hoffman and Rhys Ifans, the operation is threatened by Kenneth Branagh (a minister) who wants to shut them down and stop them from "polluting" Britain's ariwaves with their foul language and perverse music (i.e. ROCK!). I'm not exactly sure there's much of a plot there, but I don't care! Some wonderful characters, great acting, and a soundtrack I absolutely have to get my hands on! Fun, fun, FUN!

Monthly Movies: July'09
It's August 1st already?! How did that happen?!?!?! Summer's half gone and I still have loads to do! Yikes!
'twas a pretty good month for movies imo, could have maybe caught another in London (I was deeply tempted to see Public Ennemies but my time was a bit tight and besides I didn't want my Dad to have to go see it here all alone in 2 weeks!), but summer isn't really movie season around here, we prefer spending time outdoors (in my case in the water!!!)
So here's a peek at the movies I saw this past month. Have you seen any of them? What did you think? What's unique about this month's seleciton I believe, is that there are two lovely French films in there! Bon apétit! ;o)
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Got to see it in ENGLISH!!! in London! YAY!!! Well I think I waxed on long enough about this one the other day... :p If you didn't catch my thoughts the first time around you can read them here (and my revisiting of the previous films here). As an after thought, I think the elements that upset me wouldn't be as annoying to someone who hasn't read the book, since in and of itself the story is very complete. It's just that some of the details left out are crucial for the next volume! That and the final chapters of the book were so intense they didn't quite do them justice. But I still had a bloody good time with some great laughs and some bittersweet tears.
Coco avant Chanel (Coco before Chanel)
Audrey Tatou (of Amélie fame, as well as some other wonderful movies) does a splendid turn as the young Gabrielle Chanel in love and in search of independance from the conventions a man's world. I felt the pacing to be a tad slow, but otherwise thought it was a lovely movie if a bit hard to describe. More than just a portrait of a woman, it's a portrait of a certain portion of turn of the century French society (a very dissolute portion). Those looking for a peek into the glamorous world of fashion won't find it (except perhaps to understand how her tastes develop over her early life), which was perfect by me! My only regret in this movie was that it was in Spanish instead of French! Particularly since she does some nice singing and we can contrast original voices to dubbed voices... and when I see the trailer (below) I realise that the British character might be speaking French with a British accent (I love hearing accents!), sigh! Will have to check out the dvd some day...
Faubourg 36 (Paris, Paris)
A few months in the life of a Paris neighbourhood during a rather tumoultuous period right after the Front Populair (so very leftist if my memory from high-school history serves me right) won the elections (country paralyzed by "la grève générale" in order to get rights to paid leave, shorter work week etc.). That's the backdrop. The details are in a musical theatre which is the heart and soul of the Faubourg, and the people who've given their all to it for years, only to find themselves kicked out one New Year's Day... It's the story of a father and son. Of two lovers. Of a man with a heart of gold. Lovely music and fun numbers on the stage. If you enjoyed "Les Choristes" a few years back you'll enjoy this! Be prepared for laughs and tears as it can be bittersweet at times. I was overjoyed to see it in French!!! :o)
The Proposal
Summertime, not just blockbuster season but a few romcoms are out as well! Sandra Bullock is in the "iffy" column with me, sometimes I enjoy her work, others I can't stand her! This one wasn't bad, not wonderful, but a good way to pass a couple of hours. The idea behind it was funny and it was well done (plus I really enjoyed getting to visit Alaska!), but the coupling doesn't convince me at all! I can't believe the idea of the result of that weekend (trying not to spoil anything here). I did get some very good laughs at the idea of her being an "illegal immigrant"! Think "Green Card" but backwards! Great line: "It's not like I'm an immigrant or something, I'm from Canada!" (my mom used to get a lot of Northern Europeans in her office -she works for Spanish immigration- with the same attitude!). So maybe don't fork out the cash to see it in the movies, but it would make a good movie night at home.

Monthly Movies: June'09

I think in June I must have been compensating for all those movies I saw in May, lol! Either that or there was just nothing new worth watching on-screen... we'll be generous and say the former! ;o)
There were two movies I did enjoy immensly, a third not so much.
Terminator Salvation (otherwise known as T-4) which I already wrote about here, when I returned from the cinema. A month later... I still think it was pretty good and I look forward (hopeful) to a future installement!
Slumdog Millionaire - what? again?! Yup! This one's a repeat from a couple of months before (my thoughts on that here). Why? Well simple, it wasn't dubbed!!! I got the chance to see it in the original version (so a mix of Hindi and English -w/ Spanish subs) and it's just soooo much better! Went with a friend who'd also seen it before... we both enjoyed it even more that our first time!
New In Town (Ejecutiva en Apuros in Spanish) - Ouch! This is why I have to remember to read reviews before heading into movies I know nothing about! In my defense, I was a bit iffy on it -René Zellweger doesn't have my complete confidence...- but the Alicante movie website had Nathan Fillion starring in it and I sooo trust him in his choice of projects! Plus I just enjoy his work so much (see Firefly, Serenity, Castle...). Well that website LIED!!! He wasn't there!!! :o( And that rom-com was just scary-bad... so predictable, the characters so shallow... they gave you no reason to feel for them, no understanding of where they were coming from as a character so how you could appreciate their evolution? pfffffft.... Probably would have been quite a bit funnier in English what with the cultural shock game and the funky small-town Minnesota accents and vocab... but all that was lost in translation!
July looks like it will be a bit better... I'm trying to find someone who wants to see "Coco avant Channel" with me (in Spanish, sigh! I miss hearing French!), stars Audrey Tatou (Amélie), looks good! And then Harry Potter in 10 days when I get to London, yay!!! I wish I could add "Public Ennemies" to that list, but it won't hit Spanish screens until August 15th! But you can bet my Dad and I will be there on opening night! Johnny Depp + Christian Bale?! A MUST SEE!!! Add in Marion Cotillard and that it's by Michael Mann... wouldn't miss it for the world!
So, until next month!
