Coronavirus Lockdown Spanish Edition - Day 46 - Announcing deescalation!

Well here's something to look forward to! We finally have information on the Government's plan to slowly roll-back the lockdown rules. Gotta love the name "Plan for the Transition Toward a New Normality", really rolls off the tongue, lol!

It starts on Saturday with everyone allowed out (finally!) to do individual walks or work-outs, and restaurants that offer take-out options will be allowed to re-open (but not for seating). Then gradually, province by province (not all at the same time due to different conditions in each, and no movements between provinces if they are in different phases) we go through several phases:

  • Phase 0 is "preparation" - so now and next week.
  • Phase 1 (starting May 11th for provinces that meet the criteria, except some of the islands which will be able to start next week) allows for some small businesses to reopen, where distances can be maintained (no malls), as well as hotels (but not common areas) and churches (30% of capacity). Special schedule for over-65s to do their shopping.
  • Phase 2 allows for restaurants/bars to open their dining areas (terraces and good weather around here will help with the distancing!), pre-school / daycare for families who have to go to work. Cultural events will be allowed for <50 people if indoors, <400 if outdoors, and cinemas and theaters open at 30% of capacity.
  • Phase 3 "advanced phase" will still not be "life as before", for examples cinemas and theaters allowed at 50% of capacity...

Each phase to last at least 2 weeks. Moving from one to the other will be decided by the Health Ministry (based apparently on contagion/death numbers, availability of tests, and other criteria they haven't clearly laid out). So apparently, if all goes well (i.e. if everyone follows the rules and the infection numbers don't go back up, but keep decreasing), we'll reach that "new normality" at the end of June. Fingers double and triple crossed!!! It will be interesting to see what that looks like...

Personally I'm super stoked about finally being allowed outside for a walk (as in relaxing, not grocery shopping) on Saturday, and totally plan on walking the kilometer to the closest beach and just dipping my toes in the water!!! (if allowed...)

I'd be more keen on the cinemas re-opening in potentially the first week of June if there was anything interesting coming out... All the big releases have been postponed to August or even next Fall... Oh well, that will help with keeping the numbers low! But will make it hard for the cinemas to keep in business... "allowed to open" means no more subsidies to help tide them over... And the restaurants and cafés and "cervecerías" that are such an integral part of most Spanish neighborhoods are also going to be hard pressed to make ends meet with reduced capacity. I fear prices are going to go up...
