Movie Madness: Thor - Popcorn Season begins!

ARRRGH!!! I had the bulk of this post written and ready to post for April 30th... just needed to add in a short review on Thor and find some pics to illustrate it... but the movie left me feeling so blah I couldn't bring myself to write it and instead packed my bags for a trip... and then was gone without internet for 10 days and then and then... dammit time sure flies!!! So just ignore the fact that this says April... I was mostly written on April 29th except for the Thor part.

And so it begins... with Norse God Thor blasting his way into the cinemas this weekend (in Spain we got it a week before the US!), the cinematic summer is now upon us! To think, it's still April! May Asgard find us prepared. :p

"What's this?! You haven't written a word about movies in months, and you're starting up again with a popcorn flic?!?!?!" Not only have I been mum on the subject of the silver screen for far too long, I haven't even been to the movies in a month! scandalous! :D A mix of fatigue, un-interest in what was playing on the screens (the cinematic doldrums between Oscar season and summer are depressing...), oh, and a little incident on a bike that kept me immobile for a while. I'm going to try to bring back my movie-going standards of old, and take advantage of the draft posting option and write my mini-reviews for Monthly Movies as soon as I get back from the film (instead of leaving it to do them all at once when I can't remember as much and laziness kicks in at the idea of having to prepare a long post with reviews, posters and links).

As I mentioned in the first paragraph, Thor left me feeling a bit blah. Disappointed too... I was expecting so much more from it! Well, as much as you can expect from a comic book inspired movie... but with great actors and a Shakespearean director and the brilliant execution of several previous comic book films that meant I could reasonably expect a fair amount! *sigh* It wasn't to be. The whole Asgard sequence was very pretty and all, but just didn't seem to fit in with the Earth bit. Thor's exile was so short that I didn't really buy the budding relationship with Nathalie Portman's character. It was a decently fun film, but no more than that. I'd say the best thing about it was Loki, the actor who brought him to life was brilliant!

So, what else does Hollywood have in store for us this summer? The usual lot of remakes, sequels, prequels, comic book movies, cartoons etc... (*sigh* who will give us this year's Inception?). Personally I'm looking forward to these (by order of release dates), clicking on names takes you to their IMDB page:

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. A sequel, yeah... but a new adventure really! Plus: JACK SPARROW!!! :o)
edit: DAMN!!! Everything I'm hearing about this (now that it has screened for the press in LA and Cannes) is very negative... like it's been phoned in and definitely not worth the viewing.

The Tree of Life. ORIGINAL! Terence Malick means intriguing and quality. Brad Pitt + Sean Penn means count me in! ;o)

X-Men First Class. Prequel I guess. I had a blast with the X-men movies, have enjoyed the few comics I've read, plus: James McAvoy = yum!!! :p

Super 8. ORIGINAL!!! So that there is a good reason. Kyle Chandler as a town Sheriff? Count me Coach! Oh yeah, and J.J. Abrams + Spielberg. 'nuf said.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part 2. *sniffles* Am starting to stock up on kleenex... Can't believe this is the end of our Hogwarts adventures! And damn! I just realised I won't be able to see it ON the release date since I'll be in a small French seaside town for a wedding... ;o(

Cowboys and Aliens: ORIGINAL! Sounds like it's going to be a hoot, plus scary! Plus, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford? I'll be there!

How about you guys? What are you planning on seeing? Is your heart going thump, thump for a movie I didn't mentioned? Then convince me to go see it! ;o)

  1. I thought Thor was fun but sooo cheesy, and I wanted more of him and Natalie Portman, as you said, there wasn't enough for me to believe in their relationship.

Hoping to see Pirates 4 on Sunday - I'm hoping it'll be good escapist fun, plus pretty Johnny Depp. I'm really excited about Deathly Hallows which looks amazing from the trailer, and I'm not sure about X-Men 1st Class but will go to see it for the great actors involved.

  2. Hi Cris,
Sorry I have not been visiting much recently.
Since I have been spending more time sitting in my wheelchair I have not been visiting.
Tonight I decided to visit as many blogs as possible.
I just passed by to say hello.
I hope you are doing well and are fully recovered from your bike accident.
    Love,
    Herrad

  3. The only two here I'm interested in are Super 8 (hope it's good) and Harry Potter. No desire to see Jack Sparrow. I saw "I AM" and loved it.
