First Jesuit Pope, first Latinamerican Pope (actually first non-European!) and first Pope Francis! I'm hoping this is a sign of more new things in the Church. In any case he has a kind face and a sense of humour! :o)
Watching all this live has been quite moving and thrilling!
Apparently he's good on social justice, bad on 'life stuff' (i.e. homophobic and sexist presumably). Hopefully he'll talk about the former and shut up about the latter!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can be a Latinamerican priest and NOT be concerned about social justice! Particularly if you've worked in a small parish...
DeleteThe Church seems to always be a generation behind the rest of society on those issues... and since they won't elect a "young" Pope, we'll have to wait another generation to see a change of mentality in that department. :o(
But the news here has been interviewing Argentinians in the crowd (and more official people as well) and everyone is saying he's very humble, close to the people.... Anyhow, we'll see!
At least they didn't elect another European so that is encouraging. He steps into a very difficult seat. Let's hope he has the stamina and will to begin to solve the many problems within the Catholic church at the moment.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope so, there's a lot of work to do...
DeleteI am actually thinking this is all good! We will see, won't we? I am glad we are starting a new page in the Catholic Church.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly DJan!
DeleteI am pleased that they managed to choose someone who is outside of Europe, but am concerned that the vast issues faced by the Church are still, as you say, a generation away.
ReplyDeleteWatching this afternoon, however, was exciting. I was so surprised by the white smoke. I thought we were going to be in for a long stretch.
I heard about the white smoke on the radio on my way home, and rushed up to turn the tv on and see the rest of it! Exciting news, but sadly many of the hot-button issues are a generation away from being addressed... I do hope he will be able to do a lot on issues of poverty and social equality!
DeleteThis was so interesting to watch yesterday!! I was fascinated.
ReplyDeleteMe too, mesmerized! I don't know what I was doing that I missed out on all the hullaballoo when Cardenal Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI, and of course for most of my life the Pope was JPII... so this all feels very new!
DeleteVery interesting to watch.
ReplyDeleteYup! :o)
